Prof. Charlotte Cordonnier – Neurologist, Researcher and Advocate for Women’s Health
Professor Charlotte Cordonnier is a French neurologist specialising in the management of stroke, the leading cause of mortality among women. She is Professor of Neurology at the University of Lille and Head of the Vascular Neurology Department at CHU Lille. A researcher at Inserm within the Lille Neuroscience & Cognition Centre, she has served as President of the French Neurovascular Society (SFNV) since 2024.
In November 2025, she was appointed President of the Medical Board (CME) of CHU Lille, marking a major milestone in her institutional leadership.
Since October 2025, she has also been a member of the National Academy of Medicine, joining a circle of experts who help shape the future of medicine in collaboration with public policy and scientific progress.
Born on 5 October 1975 in northern France, Prof. Cordonnier completed her entire medical and academic training at the Faculty of Medicine in Lille. She obtained her PhD in Neuroscience in 2007 and was appointed Professor of Neurology in 2012.
In 2015, she was honoured by the Institut Universitaire de France, a prestigious recognition for the excellence of her scientific work.
In 2025, she received the Johan Aarli Award Lecture at the World Congress of Neurology in Seoul, an international distinction highlighting her major contributions to stroke research and clinical care.
A specialist in stroke—particularly intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH)—Prof. Cordonnier has published over 400 scientific articles in leading journals such as The Lancet, The Lancet Neurology, and Brain.
She currently directs RHU TIPITCH, an ambitious project aiming to revolutionise the management of haemorrhagic stroke through therapeutic innovation and improved care pathways.
Since 2022, she has also coordinated StrokeLink, the French national clinical research network dedicated to stroke.
From the outset of her medical career, Prof. Cordonnier has been a strong advocate for reducing gender inequalities in health, particularly in stroke.
She is the co‑founder of Women Initiative for Stroke in Europe (WISE), a European collective of female researchers dedicated to studying sex‑specific aspects of stroke in diagnosis, treatment and prognosis.
Beyond her scientific work, she is deeply committed to supporting and empowering young female researchers, notably through structured mentoring within WISE.
